It is always nice to have a few things on hand just in case. How long can you store food safely? The life of foods can vary depending on many factors such as packaging, climate, and storage options. Here is a list of a few food items that are exceptionally well for a longer shelf life option. Whole grain organic rolled oats if properly packaged and stored in a cool, dry place will stay shelf stable for 18 to 24 months. Organic steel cut oats can last even longer because they have been processed a very minimal amount. In an airtight, sealed package they can last up to 2 years and beyond. Quinoa stored in an unopened package will last for as long as 3 - 4 years. Chia seeds can last 2 years and beyond if stored properly. Flax seeds generally last up to a year. Although, keep in mind their shelf life goes down dramatically after being ground into flour. Store as whole seeds and opt to grind right before use. Pumpkin seeds will last up to 3 - 6 months if stored in an airtight bag. Quinoa, rolled and steel cut oats, chia seeds, flax seeds, and pumpkin seeds can all be stored for much longer amounts in the freezer. They are small and mighty with a long shelf life and easy cooking times. These whole grains and seeds can be added to your emergency food supplies or to rotate into your everyday eating schedule.
