Functional Food!

Have you heard of 'Functional Foods'?? Functional foods are foods that have potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition. We know that food delivers physiological benefits.  Protein is for muscle repair and growth. Carbohydrates are used for energy. Vitamins and minerals are used for cell function. Are there foods that have even greater benefits for our health? Oats are considered a functional food. Oats contain something called beta-glucan. Research has shown that beta-glucan can help lower cholesterol, reduce blood sugar and insulin response, increase feeling of fullness, and increase growth of good bacteria in the gut. Flax seed is also considered a functional food. Flax seeds contain protein, lignans, and the essential fatty acid known as omega-3.
